ครั้งแรกที่ฉันได้เข้ามายังประเทศไทย ตอนนั้นเพิ่งจะถอนตัวจากธุรกิจเทคโนโลยีเลเซอร์ในสิงคโปร์
ฉันไม่เคยคิดมาก่อนว่าจะได้ทำในสิ่งที่ฉันทำอยู่ในขณะนี้
ตอนนั้นฉันคิดว่าจะไปวาดภาพ เขียนหนังสือและได้ผ่อนคลาย
ทุกๆสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นรอบๆตัวฉันเป็นเหมือนเหตุการณ์เกินกว่าที่จะจินตนาการณ์ได้ ฉันได้ดำเนินชีวิตในที่ๆหรูหรา
มาเป็นเวลานาน และไม่เคยได้มีโอกาสได้พบเห็นชีวิตในชนบท หรือความอยากจนด้วยตาของตัวเองเลย
ฉันรู้สึกช็อก เมื่อได้มาเดินถนนในกรุงเทพ (1988/9) ได้เห็นชีวิตคนมากมายถูกข่มเหง และอยู่ในสภาวะที่ไม่ถูกสุขลักษณะ
ฉันได้ย้ายครอบครัวอันประกอบด้วย สุนัข 19 ตัว,แมว 12 ตัว,เป็ดและกระต่ายจากสิงคโปร์เมื่องที่สะอาดไร้จุดด่างพร้อย ดังนั้นฉันจึงพยายามหลบหนีจากวัฒนธรรมอันหน้าตกใจนี้โดยการย้ายมาอยู่เชียงใหม่เมืองเล็กๆในความคิดของฉันในตอนนั้น ชีวิตส่วนใหญ่ของฉันมักจะอยู่ในเมืองใหญ่ๆ ดังนั้นการย้ายมาอยู่เชียงใหม่ของฉันจึงเหมือนกับการผจญภัยอันยิ่งใหญ่
ในไม่ช้าฉันก็ได้มาถึงเชียงใหม่ เมื่อได้รับการติดต่อจากดอกเตอร์ กรรณชัย จากสวนสัตว์เชียงใหม่ เพื่อให้ไปทำงานที่นั่น เหตุที่เป็นเช่นนั้นเพราะว่าฉันมี่ประสบการณ์ 10 ปีในการเป็นอาสาสมัครดูแลสัตว์ป่าที่สวนสัตว์สิงคโปร์ และ ประสบการณ์ 2 ปี ในกรุงเทพโดยทำงานร่วมกับดอกเตอร์ พิชัย อาจสงค์กูล/มหาวิทยาลัย จุฬาลงกรณ์ โดย คุณ จำลอง ศรีเมือง โครงการช่วยสุนัขจรจัดที่หลักสี่
ช่วง 5 ปีแรกในเชียงใหม่ฉันได้ทำงานเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่อาสาสมัครดูและสัตว์ภายในสวนสัตว์เชียงใหม่ ฉันใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่ ตลอด 24 ชั่งโมงในที่ทำงาน โดยจะได้ติดต่อแค่พนักงาน สัตว์ ผู้เข้าเยี่ยมชม และเพื่อนบ้านที่บ้านสวนนนทรี อาจารย์ พิมพ์สุข ที่กลายมาเป็นเพื่อนสนิทของฉัน
วันหนึ่งพิมพ์สุขได้เข้ามาพบฉันพร้อมทั้งลิงที่อยู่ในกล่องมาด้วย มันมีสุขภาพที่แย่มาก มีแผลเต็มตัว และกระดูกหัก มันถูกทำร้ายโดยชายที่ทำงานอยู่โรงพยาบาลแห่งหนึ่งในเชียงใหม่ ระหว่างที่พิมพ์สุขกำลังเขาคิวรับใบสั่งยา เธอเห็นประตูเปิดอยู่และชายคนนี้ออกมาพร้อมลิง โดยที่ชายคนนี้ใช้ไม้ตีลิงจนกระดูกหัก
คุณนั้นพิมพ์สุขเป็นภรรยาของสัตว์แพทย์จึงวิ่งเข้าไปปกป้องมัน
โดยคนที่อยู่แถวนั้นเพิกเฉยต่อเหตูการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น เธอถ้าชายคนนั้นว่าทำไมถึงทำอย่างนี้ เขาตอบว่าเขาได้ไปซื้อลิงตัวนี้มาจากตลาดเมื่อเช้าและจะนำกลับไปที่หมู่บ้านเย็นนี้เพื่อไปกินเป็นอาหาร เขาเลยเอามันมาเก็บไว้ที่สำนักงานช่วงที่เขาต้องไปทำงาน และเมื่อเขากลับมา มันกับพังสำนักงานเสียหายหมด
ตอนนี้เขาโกรธมาก พิมพ์สุขจึงขอซื้อมันมาจากชายคนนั้นและนำมาให้ฉัน
ฉันจึงนำมันกลับไปที่สวนสัตว์เพื่อวางยาสลบและทำการเอ็กซ์เรย์ มันมีรอยแตกร้าวถึง 17 ที่ ปอดถูกทิ่ง สมองช้ำ มันเกือบจะตายในทันทีเราจึงตัดสินใจให้มันหลับอย่างสงบ มันถูกกระทำอย่าโหดร้ายรุ่นแรงเกินกว่าสิ่งมีชีวิตที่บริสุทธิ์จะรับได้ ฉันร้องไห้ตลอดทั้งคืน
ช่วงบ่ายหลังจากนั้นพิมพ์สุขโทรหาฉันแล้วเล่าว่า "แมรี่แอนด์ฉันมีเรื่องแปลกจะเล่าให้ฟัง-ชายคนที่ตีลิงได้รับอุบัติเหตุทางรถมอเตอร์ไซด์ที่หลังหมู่บ้านของเขาเมื่อคืนนี้ ตอนนี้เขากลับเข้าโรงพยาบาลเพื่อทำการรักษากระดูกแตกทั้ง 17 ที่ของเขา!
สำหรับกรณีของชายคนนี้กรรมตามสนองเขาเร็วมาก
กรรม..อืมฉันเริ่มที่จะเรียนรู้ถึงวัฒนธรรมความเชื่อของคนไทยแล้ว
บางอย่างที่ฉันต้องทำความเข้าใจอย่างลึกซึ้ง
และกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ในภายหลัง
ตอนนี้ฉันต้องทำกรรมของฉันให้สมหวัง โดยการไปตลาดนัดจัตุจักร และทำหนึ่งเสียงเพื่อสัตว์ดำเนินต่อไป

My Reason for Doing This
When I first came to retire in Thailand from my high tech laser business in Singapore, I had no thoughts about doing what I'm doing now.
I thought I was going to paint pictures and write books and RELAX!
Everything sort off just happened around me by circumstances beyond my imagination. I had lead a very sheltered life in luxury for a long time not having any opportunities to meet rural folks or see poverty with my own eyes.
I was so shocked when I walked the streets of Bangkok (1988/9) and came across so much human/animal abuse and insanitary conditions.
I had already moved my household consisting of 19 dogs, 12 cats, a duck and a rabbit up from Singapore which is a spotlessly clean city, so I tried to escape the culture shock by moving to Chiang Mai which was like a small town to me at that time. I had lived in big cities most of my life, so coming to Chiang Mai was a big adventure.
No sooner had I arrived in Chiang Mai when I was contacted by Dr.Kanchai from CM Zoo and asked to come to work there. The reason for this was that I had 10 years experience working as a volunteer with wild animals at Singapore Zoo and 2 years in Bangkok working with Dr.Pichoi Arjsongkoon/Chulalongkorn University on Khun Chamlong Srimuang's Street Dog Rescue project at Laksi.
The first 5 years in CM I was inside CM Zoo as a volunteer animal welfare officer and my work with the animals consumed me for 24hrs a day. I only had contact with zoo staff, animals and visitors to the zoo AND my neighbor in Baan Suan Nonsee Acharn Pimsouk who became a dear friend.
One day Pimsouk came to me with a monkey in a box. He was in a terrible condition with many wounds and broken bones. He had been beaten by a man who worked at Suan Dok Hospital while Pimsouk stood in a queue to fulfill a prescription. She saw a door open and the man came out with the monkey beating it with a stick until finally he broke it's bones. Pimsouk being a veterinarian's wife, ran to protect the monkey.
All the other people around ignored the incident. She asked the reason for the man's action. He said, he had bought the monkey at the market in the morning because he wanted to take it to his village in the evening to eat it. He had put it in this office while he went to work and when he came back, the monkey had wrecked the whole office. Now he was so mad. Pimsouk bought the monkey from him and brought it to me. I took him to the zoo where he was given anaesthesia and xrayed. He had 17 fractures, his lungs were pierced and he had a brain hemorhage. He was almost dead already so we decided to quietly put him to to sleep. I was outraged at such cruelty towards an innocent being. I cried all night.
The next afternoon Pimsouk called me; "Marianne, I have strange news - the man who beat the monkey had a motorcycle accident last night on the way back to his village. He is now back in Suan Dok Hospital in intensive care with 17 bone fractures!
Karma worked very fast in his case!"
Karma....hm! I was starting to learn something interesting about Thai culture,
something which I certainly wanted to have a deeper understanding of.
But more about this later,
now I must fulfill my karma by going to JJ market and keeping our One Voice campaign going. See you there! Memberships available nighly.

ยินดีต้อนรับสมาชิกใหม่

ถึงแม้ว่า50000เสียงจะดูเหมือนคนจำนวนมากแต่ฉันไม่เคยสงสัยเลยเพราะเราทำได้ ทุกๆวันฉันได้พบปะคนมากมายที่ต้องการเปลี่ยนกฎหมายที่ดีและถูกต้องสำหรับสัตว์ต่างๆ และสิ่งสำคัญที่เราต้องจำไว้คือความเปลื่ยนแปลงกำลังจะมาถึง มันเป็นเรื่องที่หลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ที่คนไทยจะละเลยการสงเคราะห์สัตว์ตามมาตรฐานสากลและยังความไว้วางใจจากสมาชิกในประเทศ และองค์กรอนามัยโลก การสงเคราะห์สัตว์จะสร้างความทัดเทียมจากความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคม
ความโหดร้ายรุนแรงกับสัตว์จะก่อให้เกิดความรุนแรงความรุกรานและการแสวงหาผลประโยชน์ต่อผู้อื่นโดยเฉพาะผู้เยาว์
แม้แต่ผู้หญิง เด็ก และ การแบ่งแยกเชื้อชาติ
มันขึ้นอยู่กับบุคคลโดยเฉพาะพวกเราที่ต้องลุกขึ้นพูดว่า จงหยุดมันซะ
พวกเราคือหนึ่งเสียงเพื่อสัตว์ในเชียงใหม่

Welcome New Members
Due to the fact that our webmaster for http://www.onevoiceforanimals.com/ is seriously ill in hospital, we are unable to complete the new website at this time, However the legal details about the club, it's goals, history & sponsors since 1993 are already translated into Thai, but the issues are not entered nor is the blog working
so I decided to set up this blog to stay in touch with everyone who is concerned about our progress with collecting members and helping animals. You can also view a VDO clip from Love Animal House produced by Khun Patiwat Yomkerd for WeTV on this site.
My job is to make you fall in love with our fellow creatures who share our daily lives and make you aware of the problems animals face as beings with no legal rights YET in this country -
BUT that's why we're all here joining hands to create A FORCE STRONG ENOUGH to speak up on behalf of those who need our urgent help.
Although 50,000 may seem a lot of people, I have no doubt we can do it. Every day I meet more people who want change, better laws & justice for animals. The important thing to remember is that CHANGE MUST COME, it is inevitable if Thailand is to keep up with international standards of animal welfare and remain a trusted member of United Nations and World Health Organization. Animal welfare equals community welfare which, in turn, equals social welfare.
Cruelty towards animals leads to violence and aggression towards others, especially minorities,
such as women, children & ethnic groups.
It is up to each and every one of us to say; STOP IT NOW!
We are the One Voice for Animals in CM,
let's Show the World that Thailand Cares about it's Animals
and we are willing to fight for their rights.
So I say WELCOME NEW MEMBERS who so consciously stepped forward and became the first 50. When we have 100 members, we will register Thailand's first animal welfare society.
We will be around JJ market most evenings with membership cards & badges available
for sign up.
We will have distribution points around CM & Bangkok as soon as we have sponsor for the badges.
